Schengen visa refusal reasons, and how to avoid them

When a Schengen visa is refused, you get a standard refusal form with the reason ticked. These are the reasons on that form, and what you can do about each one before you apply.

The official refusal reasons

  1. 1Purpose and conditions of the stay not justifiedThe officer could not see a clear reason for the trip. Fix it with a clear cover letter, a day-by-day itinerary, hotel bookings and, for visits, an invitation from your host.
  2. 2Not enough money for the stayYour bank statements did not show enough funds, or showed sudden large deposits. Show regular income over several months and a balance that fits the length of your trip.
  3. 3Doubts that you will leave before the visa expiresThe most common reason. Show your ties: your job (NOC and salary certificate), family, property, studies and your previous visas used correctly.
  4. 4Information or documents not reliableDocuments that contradict each other, such as different dates or salaries. Make every name, date and amount match across all documents.
  5. 5No valid travel medical insuranceInsurance must cover at least €30,000, be valid in all Schengen states and cover your whole stay.
  6. 6False or altered travel documentNever submit edited or fake documents. It can lead to a ban.
  7. 7Already spent 90 days in the last 180Count your previous stays before you apply with our free 90/180-day calculator.
  8. 8An alert in the Schengen Information System, or a security concernThese depend on your history, not your file.

What to do after a refusal

Most refusals we see come from small inconsistencies: a date on the NOC that does not match the flights, or a salary that does not match the bank statement. VisaQube builds every document from one trip plan, so they match.

Skip the agent. We prepare everything for you.

Your official checklist line by line, letters ready to sign, a Flight Reservation and a day-by-day itinerary, all matching. You review, sign and apply.

Common questions

What is the most common reason for a Schengen visa refusal?
Doubts about the applicant's intention to leave before the visa expires, usually because ties to home (job, family, property) were not shown clearly.
Can I reapply after a Schengen refusal?
Yes. You can apply again with a stronger file, or appeal following the instructions on the refusal form.
Does a Schengen refusal affect future applications?
It is recorded, and you will be asked about it. Disclose it honestly and show what has changed.
